Patriots add to linebacker room in free agency
The New England Patriots are shoring up their linebacker depth in free agency.
As reported by Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network on Monday, the Patriots intend to sign former Cleveland Browns linebacker Sione Takitaki. Pelissero later added that it’s a two-year deal with a base value of $6.5 million and a max value of $10 million.

Takitaki, 28, originally came into the draft as a third-round pick to the Browns. He’s since played 72 of a possible 83 games over five seasons, logging 268 total tackles, four sacks, eight QB hits, two interceptions with a pick-six, four pass breakups, and two forced fumbles.
Patriots director of scouting Eliot Wolf is familiar with Takitaki. He was the Browns assistant GM back in 2019 when Takitaki was drafted. Wolf has been with the Patriots since then, and now gets one of his guys back.
Takitaki is ostensibly a replacement at off-ball linebacker for Mack Wilson, who is leaving the Patriots to join the Arizona Cardinals. He becomes the third player to sign with the Pats from outside the organization, joining quarterback Jacoby Brissett and running back Antonio Gibson.
The Pats also retained right tackle Michael Onwenu, wide receiver Kendrick Bourne, and tight end Hunter Henry before they hit the open market. Now, they’re getting to work on augmenting their existing roster.
