The Patriots have their veteran free agent quarterback
Leading up to NFL free agency, one of the most common rumors involving the New England Patriots was that the team would be in the market for a veteran quarterback. It didn’t take long for them to make such an addition.
On Monday night, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported that the Patriots are signing veteran quarterback Jacoby Brissett. NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero later added it’s a one-year, $8 million deal worth up to $12 million.

Brissett, 31, was originally drafted by the Patriots in the third round of the 2016 NFL Draft. After one year in New England he was traded to the Indianapolis Colts for Phillip Dorsett.
After the trade Brissett was the primary starter for two seasons in Indianapolis, plus another in Cleveland – where he worked with current Patriots offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt – while serving as a backup and spot starter in other seasons, including stops in Miami and Washington as well. Last year he played in three games for the Commanders and was the backup and a veteran mentor to starter Sam Howell, a 2022 draft pick.
Now the question is, which role will the Patriots have Brissett in for the 2024 season? Will he be a true bridge starter as the Patriots figure out the rest of the roster, or will he be mentoring a high draft pick, either as a full-season backup or starting early in the season until that pick is ready?
With Brissett signed the Patriots now have three quarterbacks on their roster. He joins Bailey Zappe and Nathan Rourke. 2023 starter Mac Jones was traded over the weekend.
