Patriots lose linebacker in free agency despite initial multi-year offer
The New England Patriots’ first official free agency loss comes on the defensive side of the ball. Linebacker Mack Wilson is leaving the team to sign with the Arizona Cardinals, according to multiple reports.
Wilson is getting a three year contract from the Cardinals, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. The deal is worth $12.75 million, with a maximum value of $15 million.

MassLive’s Mark Daniels had previously reported that the Patriots extended a three-year offer to Wilson prior to the start of the legal tampering period on Monday, but Wilson elected to test the market. Daniels later added on Monday that the Patriots’ offer “was close” to what he ended up getting from the Cardinals.
Wilson, 26, was acquired by the Patriots via trade (in exchange for Chase Winovich) prior to the 2022 season. His first year in New England was rocky and he ended up exclusively in a special teams role by the end of the year. Last season though he looked much more comfortable in the Patriots’ system and became a key member of their third down defensive unit, as a more athletic sideline-to-sideline linebacker.
Athleticism will be key in the Patriots replacing Wilson. His departure could mean a bigger role for 2023 third-round pick Marte Mapu. Box safeties Kyle Dugger and Jabrill Peppers could also handle some of his assignments.
Still, it wouldn’t be surprising to see the Patriots add another off-ball linebacker. Their current depth chart at that position is made up of Ja’Whaun Bentley, Jahlani Tavai, Raekwon McMillan, and Mapu. Besides Mapu, none of those players fit the same athletic profile as Wilson.
