Eliot Wolf shares three key Patriots pre-draft meetings at NFL Combine
The NFL Combine is often described as a ‘fact-finding mission’ for NFL teams. That doesn’t just apply to what the prospects do on the field during workouts, but their in-person interactions as well.
Leading up to this point, teams have just seen the prospects on tape. the Combine presents one of the first chances for NFL decision-makers to interact with the players on a personal basis, and get to know them as people. It’s an important step in the pre-draft process, especially for players expected to go at the top of the draft who will hold ‘face of the franchise’ like status with their new teams.

As is the case with just about anything in the NFL, that’s all compounded at the quarterback position. For a team like the New England Patriots would should realistically be considering taking a quarterback with the third-overall pick, this is a very valuable opportunity – and one they’ll make the most of.
During his media availability at the Combine on Tuesday, de facto GM Eliot Wolf confirmed three key Patriots pre-draft meetings. Wolf told reporters that the team will meet with each of the top three quarterbacks this week. That group is made up of USC’s Caleb Williams, UNC’s Drake Maye, and LSU’s Jayden Daniels.
In speaking to the media, Groh stressed mental toughness and leadership as traits he’s looking for at the quarterback position. That’s something he says the team will try to gauge in part during these meetings.
“I think it’s about talking to the right people and asking the right questions and when we meet with them,” Wolf explained. “Asking the right questions – that may be here in a formal interview, that may be at a later date at the Pro Day or wherever that may be. But we have to determine who can handle being the quarterback of the New England Patriots.”
While the Combine represents the first chance the Patriots have to meet with many of the top prospects in this draft, they were already able to talk to a number of players further down the board at the showcase all-star games last month. 2024 Patriots pre-draft meeting tracker
Throughout the pre-draft process, NFL teams meet with prospects sometimes on multiple occasions. These meets can occur at showcase games like the Senior Bowl and Shrine Bowl, the NFL Combine, can be organized officially (top-30 visits), or be arranged in a number of other ways.
While these meetings aren’t always a perfect indication of who a team will draft, they often provide a general guide of the kinds of players a team is considering drafting. Tracking meetings can also come to fruition later on when a draft class hits free agency.
Last year the Patriots only had an official pre-draft meeting with one of their draft picks (Christian Gonzalez) and signed another as a UDFA (Malik Cunningham). In 2022 they met with two draft picks (Jack Jones and Marcus Jones) and another UDFA (D’Eriq King). Make of that what you will – the more pessimistic fans can use meetings as a guide to players the Patriots won’t be drafting.

This list doesn’t include the players who were at the Patriots’ local pro day. That group can be found here.
