Patriots come through with surprise release in quarterback room
Bill Belichick and the Patriots came through with their first relatively major cut in pursuit of their 53-man roster just after 4 p.m. Tuesday, with the proverbial No. 2 on the New England quarterback depth chart officially out of the mix with word that the Patriots have cut Bailey Zappe.
New England’s decision to move on from Zappe comes after just one season with the club, and with ‘Zappe Fever’ gripping the region for a quick spell last season.
Thrown into the fire during the 2022 season following injuries to Mac Jones and Brian Hoyer, Zappe, a 2022 fourth-round pick out of Western Kentucky, made four appearances a season ago, and threw for 781 yards with five touchdowns and three interceptions, and completed 65 of his 92 passing attempts (70.7 percent).
Most notably, the Patriots won two of those Zappe appearances, with a 29-0 effort against the Lions on Oct. 9, and a 38-15 win over the Browns a week later. Zappe’s win in Cleveland was certainly his best performance with the Patriots, too, as he threw for 309 yards and two touchdowns on a 24-for-34 passing afternoon.
But the ‘fever’ never quite took hold in Year 2, as Zappe had a downright ugly preseason in 2023 under Bill O’Brien, capped by a 8-for-15 showing with 54 yards and three fumbles in last weekend’s preseason finale in Tennessee.
The Patriots’ release of Zappe and Malik Cunningham, along with the earlier release of Trace McSorley, leaves Jones as the lone quarterback on the New England roster as of right now.

Cornerback Shaun Wade was present in the Patriots’ locker room on Tuesday afternoon, according to Mark Daniels. That means he’s been named to the 53-man roster.
It’s a great story for the third-year pro, who has stuck around in New England but struggled to be active on game days, let alone get playing time. But injuries, youth, uncertainty, and a relative lack of size at cornerback have combined to make the 6-foot-1 Wade a valuable piece to keep around.
I project Wade as the Patriots’ No. 4 outside cornerback, after Jonathan Jones, Christian Gonzalez, and Jack Jones. If Jack Jones is unavailable early in the season, due to his ongoing legal concerns, Wade would have a chance to get meaningful snaps.
Both rookie receivers make the team

News that should have Patriots fans excited for the future: both of their rookie sixth-round picks at wide receiver, Kayshon Boutte and Demario Douglas, have made the 53-man roster.

Demario Douglas has made the Patriots 53-man roster, per sourceDouglas has impressed throughout the summer, so he was considered a virtual lock for weeks. Boutte, meanwhile, got off to a slow start but had a strong few weeks after that. The Pats could really use some youth, explosiveness, and long-term promise at wide receiver, so the emergence of the rookies has been most welcome.

Another consideration: did Cunningham show enough to the other 31 teams that passed on him in the draft? Perhaps he will be able to come back via the Pats’ practice squad. For now, Mac Jones is the only QB left on the roster.
