Even more tackle help is coming for the New England Patriots

Throughout training camp, the New England Patriots’ lack of depth at the tackle position was a major storyline. Yet in the days leading up to the roster cut-down deadline (Tuesday at 4 p.m. ET), things have swung the other way.
The Patriots started the week by acquiring two tackles in Tyrone Wheatley Jr. and Vederian Lowe in trades. Now, they’re getting a player back that was already on the roster.

On Tuesday morning, Patriots OT Calvin Anderson will be activated from the non-football injury list today, per source.
Anderson can begin practicing immediately and it opens the door to him being available for game action as soon as Week 1.
— Field Yates (@FieldYates) August 29, 2023?s=20" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Field Yates of ESPN reported the Patriots have activated tackle Calvin Anderson off the non-football injury list (NFI). Anderson was a full participant during OTAs and Minicamp this spring, but had been on NFI since the start of training camp in late July.
Anderson, 27, signed with the Patriots as a free agent back in March. He spent the first four years of his career with the Denver Broncos, appearing in 41 games including 12 starts.
The Patriots held practice shortly after Anderson’s activation was announced. In the brief period open to the media, he took snaps with the offense in a walkthrough-like drill.

After splitting time between the left and right sides as a rookie, Anderson has played exclusively left tackle the last two years. So his fit for the current Patriots’ offensive line is unclear. Will he back up Trent Brown at left tackle? Move back to the right side? Or start at left tackle, with Brown moving to the right side where he played in 2021?
With Anderson active, there also appears to be a roster crunch coming for the Patriots’ at the offensive line position. Their four returning starters in Brown, Cole Strange, David Andrews, and Mike Onwenu should make the team, as should their three rookies in Jake Andrews, Sidy Sow, and Atonio Mafi. Add in the two players the Patriots acquired on Sunday and that total rises to nine, then Anderson makes 10. Plus, veteran Riley Reiff has been a mainstay in the offensive line arrangements this summer.
Somewhere in there will be a ‘surprise’ cut or IR placement. Reiff could be a candidate to land on IR after injuring his knee in the finale.

Patriots Roster Tracker: Making the final decisions for 2023
The New England Patriots need to cut their roster down to 53 players by 4 p.m. ET on Tuesday. That means head coach Bill Belichick still has 20-plus players to move on from, and plenty of tough decisions to make at key positions.
As of Tuesday morning, the majority of roster cuts so far were players that we considered long shots to make the team. The most recently released are quarterback Trace McSorely and punter Corliss Waitman. The move qualifying as the “biggest” surprise so far is veteran defensive tackle Carl Davis Jr., who spent the previous two-plus seasons in New England.

On Sunday, the Patriots officially announced Davis’ release, in addition to the following 10 players:
LB Diego Fagot
DB Brad Hawkins Jr.
TE Johnny Lumpkin
RB C.J. Marable
DB Quandre Mosely
DB Rodney Randle Jr.
DL Justus Tavai
OL Micah Vanterpool
TE Scotty Washington
LB Carson Wells

Due to the releases of Davis and Tavai, look for the Patriots to possibly make an outside addition at defensive tackle. At tight end, Matt Sokol has done a good job fending off others on the depth chart for a possible third spot, but we’re leaving open the possibility of a trade.
As of 2:15 p.m. on Tuesday, the Patriots have less than 20 players left to cut, but many of those remaining players could end up re-joining the team via the practice squad. Even then, they have open spots to fill. So, we’re going to keep you updated on everything that they do in the tracker below…
