Patriots make second trade of transaction-heavy day
The New England Patriots ended Sunday the same way they started it – by making a trade.

Lowe, 24, was a sixth-round pick by the Vikings in last year’s NFL Draft. The 6-foot-6, 320-pound swing tackle played four games for Minnesota last year, taking snaps on both the left and right sides of the line.
Ahead of last year’s draft, Lowe figured to be a logical target for the Patriots. Between the significant improvements he showed in his four years as a starter at Illinois, to his versatility, to the fact he played for former Patriots assistant coach Bret Bielema, he checked a number of draft boxes for the Patriots. We included him in our offensive lineman positional preview and had the Patriots selecting him in one of our mock drafts that spring.
Lowe is the second offensive tackle to be acquired by the Patriots via trade on Sunday. In the morning, they added Tyrone Wheatley Jr. in a deal with the Cleveland Browns, sending out running back Pierre Strong.
These trades come at the conclusion of a training camp that saw tackle clearly emerge as the biggest positional weakness for the Patriots. As much as the group struggled during camp and the preseason, injuries have made the situation worse. Calvin Anderson has spent the entire summer on the NFI list, and Riley Reiff – who looked like the starting right tackle at the start of camp before moving to guard – injured his knee in Friday night’s preseason finale. These trades could be a sign one of both of those players are expected to miss significant time in the regular season. Conor McDermott, last year’s starting right tackle, has missed the last two weeks due to an unknown injury as well.
Those injuries left starting left tackle Trent Brown and 2022 seventh-round pick Andrew Stueber as the only healthy primary tackles on the Patriots’ roster. The team does have some guards who can play tackle as well. Sidy Sow, who is trying to change positions after playing guard for four years in college, has seen significant time at right tackle this summer. Mike Onwenu has also played right tackle in the past, but was on PUP until this week recovering from offseason ankle surgery.
In adding Lowe, the Patriots increased their roster total to 79 players. They have to be at 53 players by 4 p.m. ET on Tuesday. We’re tracking all of their moves ahead of that deadline below…
