Celtics reportedly add another first-round pick to camp roster
The Boston Celtics have added yet another first-round pick to their crowded training camp roster, with Denzel Valentine set to join the C’s this fall, according to Tim Staudt of WILX (Michigan).
The No. 14 overall pick from the 2016 NBA Draft, Valentine will report to Boston’s training camp following a 2021-22 that included 24 NBA games between Cleveland and Utah.
That 24-game sample came with the 6-foot-4 wing totaling 69 points on 25-for-66 shooting (19-for-47 from deep), along with 42 rebounds, 11 assists, and eight steals in just under 222 minutes of total action.
Valentine isn’t completely foreign to the Celtics, either, as he finished his 2021-22 season with a 12-game run for the Maine Celtics of the G League. In Maine, Valentine averaged 14.6 points, 10.3 rebounds, and 7.0 assists per game while shooting 44.0 percent (35.2 from three-point range) from the field.
Overall, the Lansing, Mich. native has appeared in 256 career NBA games (all but 24 of them with Chicago), and has averaged seven points per game on 39.4 percent shooting.
And as mentioned, Valentine is yet another first-round pick to receive an invite to Celtics training camp in pursuit of a roster spot, joining 2014 first-round picks Noah Vonleh (No. 9 overall) and Bruno Caboclo (No. 30 overall), as well as 2019 first-round pick Mfiondu Kabengele (No. 27 overall).
