Patriots sign cornerback in first free-agent move outside organization
The New England Patriots have focused on retaining internal free agents so far in 2022. But on Wednesday morning, ahead of the official start of free agency, they’ve agreed to terms with a player outside the organization, and at their biggest position of need.
According to Former Texans’ CB Terrance Mitchell is signing a one-year, $3 million deal with the New England Patriots, per source.
Most recently, Mitchell played 14 games with 13 starts for Houston in 2021, making one interception and 10 pass breakups. He played 84 percent of snaps (796 total) for the Texans, so he certainly doesn’t lack experience.
Patriots fans may remember Mitchell from their 2021 game against the Texans, in which the cornerback punched the ball loose from Damien Harris at the goal line to prevent a touchdown and spark a turnover.
The Pats started the legal tampering period by re-signing key veteran pieces, like safety Devin McCourty, special teams captain Matthew Slater, quarterback Brian Hoyer, running back James White, and kicker Nick Folk. They also traded Chase Winovich to the Browns for Mack Wilson and sent Shaq Mason to the Bucs for a fifth-round pick.
