Meet the New England Patriots’ 2021 draft class
The Patriots made eight total picks in the 2021 NFL Draft, and addressed almost every position on each side of the ball – starting with the most important one on the field.
As one of the most surprising-but-not-that-surprising picks in the first round, Mac Jones became the highest-drafted quarterback in Bill Belichick’s Patriots tenure. In a vacuum, the former Alabama quarterback fits what the Pats want out of their QB: accuracy, ball security, sound decision-making, slick movement within the pocket.
The Jones pick fulfills two of Robert Kraft’s chief mandates: draft better, and solidify the quarterback position. Belichick simply could not miss with his first-round pick in a year like this, and Jones is a safer pick than Ohio State’s Justin Fields, who went No. 11 to the Chicago Bears. Jones has a lower ceiling than Fields, but he’s more NFL-ready with a higher floor. Under the tutelage of Belichick and Josh McDaniels, Jones’ odds of being a complete bust in the NFL seem low.
In the second round, the Patriots aggressively targeted the best defensive tackle prospect in the draft, trading up to take Alabama’s Christian Barmore. The Patriots have good veteran depth on the defensive line, but Barmore adds long-term upside at a position that Belichick hadn’t addressed in round 1 or 2 since Malcom Brown in 2015.
Here’s a closer look at all the picks the Patriots made in the 2021 draft…
