Celtics close facility after Jayson Tatum tests positive for COVID-19

The Celtics are in the early stages of what could potentially be one of the first COVID outbreaks in the NBA this season. On Saturday morning, a report indicated star Jayson Tatum was being placed in the NBA’s health and safety quarantine protocol due to contact tracing. Now we know Tatum has in fact tested positive for COVID-19.
According to Gary Washburn of The Boston Globe, the Celtics ‘immediately’ placed Tatum in quarantine after learning of his positive test. The team also canceled a scheduled Saturday practice, and shut down the facility after Friday night’s win over the Washington Wizards.
Tatum is the second member of the Celtics to test positive for COVID-19 this week, after forward Robert Williams. Both will miss 10-14 days due to the league’s COVID protocols. Grant Williams and Tristan Thompson are also in quarantine, due to their proximity to Robert Williams leading up to his positive test.
As of late Saturday afternoon, no other Celtics had been placed in the protocol. There is no timeline for the team to reopen their facility, although Sunday’s game against the Miami Heat is still expected to be played as scheduled, per Washburn.
