Final: Patriots top Ravens 23-17 on Sunday Night Football

The Patriots scored a huge win over the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday night, 23-17. Read below for a recap of live updates during the game.

Live Updates: Patriots vs Ravens

— Q4, 1:05: We’ll see if the Patriots bled enough clock. The Ravens have to go 83 yards in 65 seconds.

— Q4, 4:20: Ravens get a bad snap that sets them back offensively, and they’re forced to punt again. They now have to hope for a quick stop, or else the Patriots could bleed enough clock to put the game away.

— Q4, 7:09: After the defense gets a huge stop, the Patriots can’t capitalize. They’re forced to punt again after Cam Newton’s third-down pass to Rex Burkhead is well short of the line. Ravens get another opportunity to take back the lead.

— Q4, 13:14: Patriots forced to punt after the Ravens get a quick three-and-out. Baltimore has regained some momentum in this game and now has a chance to take the lead back on their first offensive drive of the fourth quarter.

— Q3, 0:08: Not over yet. The Ravens claw themselves back in the game on a weird but effective drive. After a procedural penalty wiped out a big gain, Baltimore went 56 yards in eight plays for the score. Willie Snead gets his second TD of the game, but the Patriots still lead 23-17.

— Q3, 6:24: Patriots cash in on the turnover on downs and go up two scores. They go 35 yards in seven plays capped with a Nick Folk field goal after Cam Newton’s pass attempt to Jakobi Meyers in the end zone hits the turf. A touchdown would have really put the Ravens up against it, but it’s still an uphill climb for Baltimore as the Patriots lead 23-10.

— Q3, 9:40: The Ravens often go for it on fourth-and-1, so it was no surprise to see them do it here. But John Harbaugh opts to call a direct snap to Mark Ingram in the wildcat, and the snap is off. Ingram has to fall on the ball and the Patriots get an easy turnover on downs. They are in business with the ball, up 10, at the Ravens’ 37-yard line.

— Q3, 13:42: Patriots start the second half with as impressive a drive as you can ask for. Damien Harris takes advantage of gaping holes in the running game on rushes of 16 and 25 yards, then Cam Newton hits Jakobi Meyers for 26 through the air. This sets up an easy 4-yard run by Newton breezing into the end zone. Patriots lead 20-10.

— Halftime: Patriots 13, Ravens 10. Patriots have serious momentum heading into halftime. The Ravens had a chance to get last-minute points, but J.C. Jackson picks off the attempted deep ball to save the Pats. Cam Newton kneels and the Patriots take a 13-10 lead into the half.

— Q2, 1:02: Patriots go 75 yards in 10 plays on a potentially huge touchdown drive to capitalize off holding the Ravens to a field goal. The score comes off the arm of not Cam Newton but Jakobi Meyers, who converted from quarterback to wide receiver. His double-pass to Rex Burkhead is a dime and the Patriots have a 13-10 lead after Nick Folk misses the extra point.

— Q2, 5:32: Ravens almost answer with yet another touchdown, but this time Lamar Jackson skips it into the turf on third-and-goal with Mark Andrews open. A wide-open catch-and-run by Gus Edwards for 31 yards helped set the Ravens up for points. Baltimore has to settle for a field goal, but they take the lead back. It’s 10-7 Ravens.

— Q2, 12:33: Patriots with an excellent answer drive. Cam Newton hits Rex Burkhead on a misdirection play for the pitch-and-catch touchdown. Burkhead got three touches on the drive, including a conversion on the Patriots’ only third down play. 7-7 tie.

— Q2, 14:54: The Ravens faced second and 9 from their own 18-yard line, but then ripped off plays of 13, 5, 21, 7, and 19 yards to get into the red zone. Four plays later they were in, as Willie Snead takes the drop-off sweep “pass” from Lamar Jackson to pay dirt. 7-0 Ravens.

— End Quarter 1: Patriots 0, Ravens 0. The opening frame zips right by as both teams are running the ball a lot. The Ravens have carved up the Patriots defense on their second drive and are knocking on the door to the end zone with first-and-goal from the 6.

— Q1, 7:58: Patriots offense tries to grind its way down the field on their first offensive drive but can’t keep it rolling far enough. They did convert on fourth-and-1 with a Cam Newton QB sneak, but Newton took a sack on the next third down play. The Pats had to punt from there, but pinned the Ravens at their own 6-yard line.

— Q1, 13:36: After a promising first play, the Ravens’ first offensive drive stalls out against the Patriots defense. A 17-yard catch-and-run by Mark Ingram seemed to get them rolling, but the Ravens lost one yard over the next three plays. Jason McCourty locked down Marqise Brown on third down.

— 8:20PM: Patriots win the coin toss and choose to defer to the second half. Next update will be from the actual game.

— 8:15PM: Patriots run out for their team intro. You can see with the smoke machines that the wind is blowing wildly right now.

— 7:43PM: Patriots trade acquisition Isaiah Ford is active tonight, wearing No. 84. It’ll be interesting to see how the receiver snap counts shake out, with N’Keal Harry back in the lineup and Jakobi Meyers excelling in an increased role while Harry was out.

— 7:40PM: The rain has begun to fall at Gillette Stadium. It looks like misty rain right now, but it’s supposed to get heavier at some point after the game starts.

— 7:05PM: Cam Newton’s pregame outfit certainly did not disappoint.

— 6:53PM: Patriots inactives are out. CB Stephon Gilmore is out for the third straight game, while LB Ja’Whaun Bentley will miss his second game in a row. WR N’Keal Harry, however, is back after getting through the concussion protocol.

— 6:44PM: Among the Patriots warming up with strength & conditioning coach Moses Cabrera: N’Keal Harry, Chase Winovich, Joejuan Williams, Jonathan Jones, Jake Bailey, Devin McCourty, and Jakob Johnson. There are others but it’s hard to tell with the mask-wearing.

— 6:38PM: David Andrews, Joe Cardona, and Nick Folk were among the Patriots to take the field extra-early for pregame warmups.

— 6:15PM: The weather forecast for Foxboro calls for rain to roll in by 9:00, with wind gusts as high as 21 mph. Ball security is going to be paramount for both teams in what will be treacherous conditions for much of the game.
