Red Sox draft D’Angelo Ortiz, son of David Ortiz
The Boston Red Sox are investing in the next generation of the Ortiz family.
In the 19th round of the 2024 MLB Draft, the Red Sox selected infielder/outfielder D’Angelo Ortiz. He is the son of former Red Sox slugger and baseball Hall of Famer David Ortiz.
D’Angelo, 20, played the 2022 and 2024 seasons for the Brockton Rox in the Futures Collegiate League. In 54 FCBL games, he’s batted .325 with no homers, 42 RBIs, and a .777 OPS. He played the 2023 season at Miami Dade College, where he batted .328 with one homer and 38 RBIs in 48 games.
Any 19th round pick can be considered a long-shot to make the major leagues, but it would certainly be quite a story if D’Angelo improves to the point that he can play for the Boston Red Sox. At that point in the draft, it certainly seems like it was worth it for the Red Sox to take a chance on him.
The Red Sox did make a first-round pick, selecting Texas A&M outfielder Braden Montgomery 12th overall.
