Zolak & Bertrand: What Jeremy Swayman’s extension revealed about talks with the Bruins
On Monday’s edition of Zolak & Bertrand, the crew touched on what Jeremy Swayman’s extension revealed about his negotiations with the Bruins.
Swayman’s ask wasn’t ridiculous…
Marc Bertrand:
Jeremy Swayman wanted it to be over $8 million a year. That was clearly a line in all of this. The $8 MM mark. And the Bruins were going to $7.8 MM, but not over $8 MM. Then when we heard that number of $8.5 MM last week, if that’s his demand, then they should settle for $8.25 MM and be done. So, that tells you his ask was not $10 MM a year. If you’re asking for $10 MM a year, do you settle for $8.25 MM? No, you don’t. So, let’s get off of that point with Jeremy Swayman, that his demand was not $10.5 MM. This was not about setting the market. Did he set the market? No. Was he asking for $10 MM? I certainly don’t think so based on what he signed for. Was his ask reasonable in the mid 8s? Yes, it was and I think that he still signed for a very reasonable number. The only thing you want to say if you think the contract is unreasonable in any way, if you’re making that argument and I’m not, it’s about the years. It’s not about the dollar figure per year. $8.25 MM… is that a number that breaks your cap or puts your team at a disadvantage because you have $8.25M M locked up? No. Going forward, assuming the cap number is going up… still no. This makes him a Top 5 paid goalie in the league. Tied for 4th actually.
