Jerod Mayo responds to comments about potential ‘mutiny’ in Patriots locker room
Are the New England Patriots on the verge of a mutiny in the locker room?
That’s been a big question surrounding the team over the past 18 hours or so, after Patriots.com host Evan Lazar gave a strong take on Thursday’s “Catch-22” show. Lazar hosts the show weekly with Alex Barth, who also covers the Patriots for 98.5 The Sports Hub. But the latest episode is getting more attention than perhaps they were expecting, based on an incendiary comment by Lazar about mounting frustration behind the scenes at Gillette Stadium following a 1-3 start and struggles on both sides of the ball, but especially on the offense and the quarterback situation.
“Right now they’re teetering on mutiny in that locker room,” Lazar said. “And I don’t want to be alarmist or [hyperbolic], I don’t, but I was in that locker room on Sunday. … I said this before and I’ll say it again: you’re at the point now, with 52 other guys in that locker room, that all watch these quarterbacks practice every single day, that all know that they drafted Drake Maye third overall, and at what point in time do some of these guys say to themselves, ‘Why am I going out there and getting my butt kicked every Sunday and Drake Maye can’t? Why am I going out there with a quarterback who can’t get me the football when we have the Ferrari back in the garage that can get me the football?”

Lazar joined the Joe Murray show on 98.5 The Sports Hub later on Thursday, saying he “got a little carried away” with the “mutiny” part.
On Friday, Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo was asked about the comment and whether he felt any possible insubordination coming from inside the locker room between himself and the players.
“My focus is definitely on the Dolphins, 100 percent, and the guys in the locker room,” Mayo said Friday. “I haven’t heard that. I mean, that’s journalism for you. I’m not sure.”
Pressed with a follow-up, Mayo added: “Like I said, I haven’t heard that and try not to pay attention to that stuff. You got to ask him [Lazar].”
The Patriots made this whole thing a bigger story than it could’ve been, by temporarily pulling the show, then re-uploading it with audio only, and the “mutiny” portion edited out. It’s a tough look for the team to try to control that message, when clearly it wasn’t going to be scrubbed from the internet entirely. All that did was make people want to hear it more.
The word “mutiny” from Lazar was certainly strong. The Patriots players aren’t gathering outside of Mayo’s office with torches and pitchforks, ready to bring him to the gallows and overthrow the team leadership. But the comment, in its full context, is based in some form of truth. You could see plainly on the field, particularly with young receivers like DeMario Douglas and Ja’Lynn Polk, that frustration is building over their inability to move the ball with Jacoby Brissett at quarterback.
Lazar is one of the top reporters on the Patriots beat, and talks a lot to the players in that locker room, so he’s not just spewing total misinformation. He just happens to be an employee of the Patriots, so apparently, they thought he went too far to use the word “mutiny.”
Because of the team’s overreaction, the focus on possible issues in the Pats locker room will only intensify. They better hope the Patriots win on Sunday against the Dolphins, or otherwise prove that there’s no mutiny brewing.
