Fred Toucher on Wyc Grousbeck: ‘Worst Possible Scenario’ to sell Celtics after Championship win
When the Celtics won their 18th championship last month, co-governor Wyc Grousbeck celebrated a smooth season that ended with the ultimate prize. But on the same day the team extended Jayson Tatum and Derrick White, they announced the franchise was for sale. Co-governor Steve Pagliuca said he wanted to stay involved and keep his ownership stake. Grousbeck later explained on CNBC’s “Closing Bell” that the sale was due to estate and family planning reasons.
On the Toucher & Hardy radio program, Fred Toucher sympathized with Wyc Grousbeck, likening his situation to being forced by his nearly 90-year-old father to sell the Celtics despite just celebrating a championship. Toucher called it the worst possible scenario for Grousbeck. Hardy and Wallach added that the team is in a great position with financial stability and a strong chance to win another title.

Fred Toucher: So imagine you’re having this tremendous experience, and then your dad, who’s about to turn 90, comes in and says, “Guess what, everyone? This kid doesn’t own it. I do, and now he’s gotta sell it.” And now the guy who just two to three weeks ago was on a duck boat and on television celebrating and getting sprayed with champagne, now has to slink into CNBC and say, “Oh yeah, I don’t own the team. My daddy does. And now Daddy’s making me sell it.” That sucks. And I don’t say it to be mean because I do think this is all very mean. I say it just to drive home how much this sucks for him. I feel really bad for him. Do you guys think in any way, shape, or form Groesbeck wants to sell this at this point?
Hardy: No.
Fred Toucher: This is like the worst thing that could be happening to him.
Wallach: This is as good as it gets. Your team has cost certainty for the next two to three years. You are stable, you’re in place to make a run. Celtics have a chance to go back-to-back.
