Toucher: Drake Maye is too young to read NFL defenses
On Tuesday’s Toucher & Hardy program, Dan Roche joins the show to discuss whether or not Drake Maye is ready to start Week 1 for the New England Patriots.
Toucher on Drake Maye
Parts of conversation abbreviated for clarity.
Dan Roche: Drake Maye is now ahead of the plan. And I think what it may be is driving everybody crazy, including Jerod Mayo. Jacoby Brissett has the upper hand because he’s played in Alex Van Pelt’s offense before.
The question is—is Drake Maye the best option for the Patriots to beat the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 1? And I think if you look at it, he might just be. Just look how good he is. The kid is better than anybody thought on that staff at this point.
He’s come way along way quicker than anybody thought. And even Maye alluded to that in his postgame presser the other day. He said, “I’m quicker at reading defenses. I’m good at reading blitzes.”
Fred Toucher: Bill Belichick recently said that defenses are running one or two schemes now and they’re deliberately putting corners in man-to-man situations. They want to see if rookie quarterbacks can handle man-to-man.
I don’t doubt that maybe he could pull something out of his ass and make a spectacular play. And maybe that’ll make the difference in a game. But I don’t buy that he can read defenses better than Brissett. Or that he’s capable of doing that.
Roche: Is he capable of playing better than Brissett in the season opener? That’s the question. Maybe I would play Brissett.
Toucher: There’s no way Maye will be able to go into that game and understand everything that’s going on defensively with Cincinnati. The Bengals are a very good team.
I don’t think that there’s any way that in his first game, a 21-year-old kid will succeed. Especially, coming from that with the terrible offensive coordinator last year in North Carolina.
Everyone says that the real game speed is completely different.
