Marc Bertrand: Patriots look “foolish” with this GM search
On Wednesday’s edition of Zolak & Bertrand, Marc “Beetle” Bertrand went off about how the Patriots look foolish by doing their GM search right now.
It’s just silly…
Marc Bertrand: But don’t you think the Patriots have looked like a bit of a clown show the last couple of days with this GM search that nobody believes in? What is the point of this? Nobody believes you’re actually going out and hiring someone not named Eliot Wolf. The league doesn’t believe it. You’ve been rejected publicly by multiple candidates that want no part of the interview process so you could check a box on the Rooney Rule. They’re publicly telling you no because it’s a joke of a process. And although I do appreciate them getting people through the door to pick their brains and, you know, maybe steal some new ideas. The people that are coming in there are going to be more guarded than they would otherwise be. If they thought it was a legitimate search, they might be more willing to share some really good ideas about the Patriots and what they think the team could and should do at this point. They’re going to go in and be guarded and just use it as a networking opportunity more than anything else. And I think they look kind of silly for it. How many times you see a team conducting a public wide open GM search when they have their GM in the middle of May? This is not common. What Phil points out is true. They knew they were firing their head coach in Bill Belichick how long ago?
Tim McKone: During the season.
Scott Zolak: November.
Marc Bertrand: Robert apparently wanted to do it a year ago. And didn’t. And we’ve heard numerous reports that the Germany game was the nail in the coffin. So after that game, they knew it. They’ve been thinking about it. And when that happened, they said, we’re done. He’s done. And it was over and they already had their next head coach hired. That was done as well. They did not have to do a coaching search. They had plenty of time to conduct this GM search in January, early February, and they chose not to. Now they’ve got this going on and I think they look kind of stupid for it. You could have done this months ago. You could have had a legitimate search. You could have actually had guys come through the door and give you better ideas, because they were trying and vying for the gig. And now they know they’ve got no chance and it’s going to be Eliot Wolf no matter what happens here.
