Josh Uche chooses Patriots despite better offers in free agency
At least one free agent preferred to stay with the New England Patriots over other potential suitors: according to multiple reports, linebacker Josh Uche is returning to the Pats on a one-year deal.
Mike Garafolo of the NFL Network first reported that Uche and the Patriots had agreed to terms. Garafolo added that Uche “had much more on the table elsewhere,” but ultimately chose to stay in New England for less. Additionally, CBS Sports’ Jonathan Jones said Uche had interest from at least two other teams but “placed a priority on staying” with the Patriots.

Uche made only three sacks in 15 games in 2023, but is two years removed from racking up 11.5 as a dynamic pass-rushing linebacker for the Patriots defense. The Pats had a sneaky-need among edge rushers in light of the idea that Uche would depart as a free agent. Instead, they keep a potential key pass-rush specialist in the fold.
Albert Breer of SI reported the full numbers for Uche: one year, base value of $3 million, and a maximum of $8 million through incentives.
The contract is an indication that Uche didn’t love what he was getting out there in a potential open-market deal, and has opted to go for another contract year with a known commodity in New England, and an eye toward the 2025 off-season to cash in after improving his numbers.
For the Patriots, the hope is Uche gets close to that $8 million number, because that means things have gone well for him after his production dipped in 2023. And for Director of Scouting Eliot Wolf, it’s a sign that he still views Uche as a core piece that was worth keeping for another year.
