Patriots scouts hint at positions to target in 2024 NFL Draft
The New England Patriots have obvious positions of need. And thankfully, their scouting department is talking openly about them.
Thanks to a new piece by Patriots.com insider Evan Lazar, the Patriots have given a glimpse into their “collaborative” scouting process ahead of the 2024 NFL Draft. It’s a curious situation, as the Patriots stand without a GM, although Eliot Wolf is ostensibly operating like one without the official title. But their front office is hard at work on the draft, nonetheless.

And they’re looking at the positions they should be looking at. That would be quarterback, wide receiver, and offensive tackle. Of course.
The QBs are an obvious one, as the Patriots have the third overall pick and there are three potential names at the position in USC’s Caleb Williams, UNC’s Drake Maye, and LSU’s Jayden Daniels. But the scouts speak to a deep class, which means their guy may ultimately slip to their second-round pick at 34, or even in the third round at 68.
“There’s a lot of talented quarterbacks,” College Scouting Director Camren Williams told Lazar. “For us, it’s going to be a big process. That position … there’s so much about this part when we actually get to meet them. This is where quarterbacks separate themselves. There are different categories within the process.
“But, in general, it’s a talented quarterback class.”
As for wide receiver, Marvin Harrison Jr. is the obvious pick at No. 3 if the Patriots want to go in that direction. But it’s shaping up to be a deep class at that position as well, so Director of Player Personnel Matt Groh will have his options of players to stack on the big board.
“You need to have explosive players,” Groh told Lazar. “You look at the teams that are playing deep into the playoffs and they have explosive players, whether that’s on the perimeter, or the backfield, or the tight end position. The quickest way to score points is through explosive plays. You get that by having explosive players and somebody who can get those guys the ball.”
And yet, despite the team’s urgent need for talent at quarterback and wide receiver, they can’t forget about tackles. A good QB can only do so much if he can’t be protected properly. That’s why Joe Alt out of Notre Dame (pictured at the top) remains a realistic pick for the Patriots at third overall. But the 2024 tackle class is yet another deep one, and so logic would dictate that a plug-and-play starter will be available to the Patriots at 34 or later.
“There’s a couple of good positions in this draft,” Williams told Lazar. “Quarterbacks are pretty deep, tackle is deep, so there’s probably different avenues to make our team better based on what’s available in the draft.”
Whatever route the Patriots end up taking, they recognize the biggest needs. There’s reason to be confident that the Patriots will address them in the draft, and aggressively so.
