Patriots waive struggling special teams player

On Thursday afternoon the New England Patriots claimed linebacker Christian Elliss off waivers. Because the team played Thursday night they deferred their corresponding roster move to Friday.
That move came Friday afternoon, when the team announced running back/wide receiver Ty Montgomery had been waived. That move gets the Patriots’ active roster back to 53 players.
Montgomery, 30, began the season on the Patriots’ practice squad before being added to the active roster in September. He mainly played a special teams role, recording 198 snaps in the kicking game compared to just 42 on offense.
In recent week’s Montgomery’s special teams play had been in the spotlight as the unit struggled as a whole. He had just one kick return of over 25 yards on eight tries this season, and none of the six he ran out of the end zone reached the 25-yard line. Then on Thursday night, Montgomery was pushed back by a Steelers rusher leading to a blocked punt at a key moment of the game.
The Patriots first signed Montgomery in the 2022 offseason, but he suffered an injury in the season opener and missed the rest of the season. Montgomery also missed most of this past training camp due to injury, but did play in 13 games.
Because it’s passed the trade deadline, Montgomery will be subject to the waiver process. If he clears, the Patriots could bring him back on the practice squad.

Back in the win column: 7 takeaways from the Patriots' win over the Steelers
The New England Patriots are back in the win column. On Thursday night they snapped a five-game losing streak, beating the Pittsburgh Steelers 21-18 at Acrisure Stadium.
In a season that has become more about draft position than in-game results, this win drew mixed reactions. The reality is, it shouldn’t.

First off, making losing a habit is never a good thing. That’s a slippery slope to go down. Even in a down season, maintaining overall organizational direction is important.
As for the 2024 pick itself, this loss is hardly a backbreaker. The Patriots are still where they were entering the night, in position for the second overall pick. That’s thanks to a significant edge in the strength of schedule tiebreaker with the Arizona Cardinals.
Finally, it’s simply too soon to declare this win is catastrophic for the Patriots’ draft position. Last year, the Houston Texans winning two of their final three games to fall out of the top pic was seen as a disaster. Yet picking second overall and landing C.J. Stroud ended up being the best thing that could have happened for them.
Draft pick aside, what did we learn from this game? Let’s get to tonight’s takeaways…
