While the New England Patriots continue to figure out their quarterback situation, their upcoming opponent will be dealing with a quarterback switch of their own. This one, however, is due to injury.
The Pittsburgh Steelers, who the Patriots play on Thursday night, will start Mitch Trubisky this week after starter Kenny Pickett suffered an ankle injury during Sunday’s 24-10 loss to the Arizona Cardinals. Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin confirmed on Monday morning that Trubisky will start Thursday night.

Pickett had started all 12 games for the Steelers up to this point, and led them to a 7-5 record. On the season, the 2022 first-round pick has completed 62 percent of his passes for 2,070 yards (172.5 yards per game) with six touchdowns and four interceptions.
Trubisky, the second-overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft by the Chicago Bears, has appeared in three games for the Steelers this year as a backup. He’s completed 59.2 percent of his 49 pass attempts, with two touchdowns and two interceptions. He started last year’s game between the Patriots and Steelers, and completed 21 of his 33 passes for 168 yards with a touchdown and an interception in a 17-14 Patriots win.
With Pickett undergoing surgery on Monday the Steelers also added another quarterback to their room. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Pittsburgh is signing Trace McSorley to its practice squad. McSorley spent the summer with the Patriots as the third quarterback behind Mac Jones and Bailey Zappe, before being released as part of final roster cuts.

Quarterback change fails to provide a spark: 9 takeaways from the Patriots' loss to the Chargers
For a 2-9 team, there was a lot of anticipation for the New England Patriots’ Week 13 matchup with the Los Angeles Chargers at Gillette Stadium on Sunday. The team made a long-awaited quarterback switch, with Bailey Zappe making his first start of the year in place of Mac Jones.
Despite the change, the results looked similar. While the Patriots had just one turnover – a Rhamondre Stevenson fumble on a play during which he got hurt – for the first time in four weeks, the offense failed to capitalize. They ended up with 257 total yards, which was down from last week and 40 yards below their season average for yards in a game, and were shut out for the second time in 2023.
