Patriots reportedly add running back depth by signing USFL standout
For most of training camp, the Patriots have had to work with a three running back rotation with Rhamondre Stevenson limited and Ty Montgomery out due to injury. The lack of depth has been notable, and on Friday night the team did something to address it.
According to NFL insider Aaron Wilson, the Patriots are signing running back C.J. Marable to their active roster. The Patriots had been in contact with Marable in recent weeks, hosting him for a workout last Thursday.

Marable, 26, has spent the last two seasons with the Birmingham Stallions of the USFL, winning a pair of USFL Championships the last two springs. In 10 games this past season Marable rushed for 525 yards – the fourth-most in the league – on 118 carries. He also caught 28 passes for 235 yards, and scored five total touchdowns.
Before joining the USFL in the spring of 2022, the 5-foot-10, 200-pound running back was with the Chicago Bears as a UDFA. He played collegiately at Coastal Carolina. The Chanticleers finished the 2020 season as the 14th-ranked team in the nation, and Marable was named first-team All-Sun Belt that year.

In order to make Marable’s signing official, the Patriots will need to make a corresponding move. Their active roster is currently full at 90 players.
Once he is officially signed, Marable will add some much needed depth for the preseason behind Pierre Strong, Kevin Harris, and J.J. Taylor. However, he’s probably a long-shot to make the initial 53-man roster and is likely competing for a practice squad spot. This signing shouldn’t rule the Patriots out of contention to sign veteran free agent backs such as Ezekiel Elliott or Leonard Fournette.
