Patriots captains share how they’ve seen Mac Jones change heading into his third NFL season
It’s no secret that the last few years have seen significant turnover for the Patriots’ offense. Through it all two players have emerged as leaders of the new-look group – veteran center David Andrews and now-third-year quarterback Mac Jones. They were the lone two team captains from the offensive side of the ball last season.
Heading into this season, both should be in the spotlight once again. Andrews is the leader of an offensive line group that is arguably the most questionable position group on the Patriots’ roster, while Jones finds himself facing a pivotal seasons as his fifth-year option looms this upcoming offseason after a disappointing 2022 campaign.

Ahead of the Patriots’ first training camp practice, Andrews shared on Tuesday how he’s seen Jones change heading into his third NFL season.
“Just seeing him grow more confident. Getting older he’s doing more. Getting comfortable in the system – things we’re doing. I know he’s been here a lot of the summer working with guys and doing things like that. So that’s always great – as much as they can get on the same page,” he explained. “I think Mac’s got all the tools to succeed.”
Andrews wasn’t the only captain to be asked about Jones on Tuesday. Matthew Slater also had praise for the quarterback. “He’s a resilient young man. Playing quarterback is one of the toughest jobs in all of pro sports,” Slater began, talking about how much Jones has been in the public spotlight both on and off the field. “He’s shown a great deal of mental toughness. I think he’s learning, ‘hey, I’m just going to focus on the things that I can control, keep my head down, work hard, try to get better for our football team.'”
