With the current writer’s strike, there’s potential for many new streaming programs to be delayed, leading to fans seeking alternate entertainment methods. If you’re looking to try out a podcast, you might want to check out the most popular ones. The Waycroft recently highlighted the top podcasts in every state. The most popular podcast in Massachusetts mashes murder mystery with music.
Over the past three years, The Waycroft noticed a significant increase in podcast popularity. Moreover, it became apparent that after the pandemic, people were expanding their entertainment interests beyond just a binge of “Netflix and chill.”
“We collected Google search data in the U.S. over the past 12 months on the first 50 podcasts on Apple Podcasts’ Top 100 chart. Then we crunched the numbers and uncovered the podcasts people searched for the most across the country,” The Waycroft explains.
So what is the most popular podcast in Massachusetts for 2023?
Dead And Gone
The Bay State stood alone as the only state where Dead and Gone, a Grateful Dead-themed murder mystery series took home the top spot. If you are not familiar, this podcast has two seasons full of episodes that break down unexplained accidents, and unresolved murders that have occurred over time within the Deadhead community.
“Across five decades, a string of unexplained accidents, murders and disappearances have befallen some of the band’s most dedicated fans,” Apple Podcasts explains. Furthermore, The Waycroft calls them “true crime stories.”
This podcast first launched at the end of 2020. The first episode, entitled “The Secret Memory” starts off by asking a question. “Why have so many fans of the Grateful Dead gone missing or been murdered?” Twenty episodes then follow. They get deeply into the details of many individual occurrences, even interviewing people who were there, to demonstrate.
Dead and Gone is hosted by Payne Lindsey from Up and Vanished and Jake Brennan who is also well known for his Disgraceland podcast series.
Demandsage reports that so far in 2023 we are up to 464.7 million podcast listeners. As a result, this already exceeds the 424.2 million listener number from 2022.
Dead and Company played Fenway Park on June 24 and 25. In fact, both shows saw massive attendance numbers. This again proves that Massachusetts fans are highly interested in the Grateful Dead culture, in addition to the state’s most popular podcast that examines the lesser-known mysteries of their story.
