Patriots make first two practice squad elevations of 2021 season
The New England Patriots have made their first two practice squad elevations to the main roster ahead of the 2021 season opener.
As the team announced Saturday, they are bringing up quarterback Brian Hoyer and kicker Nick Folk. Hoyer is not surprising, since the Pats needed another QB on the roster behind starter Mac Jones.
Folk gets the call-up for Week 1 despite the presence of rookie Quinn Nordin on the 53-man roster, indicating that he is ready to play after missing time in training camp and the preseason. Nordin, meanwhile, seems headed for the inactive list.
In addition, the Patriots announced that they placed wide receiver Malcolm Perry on injured reserve. Perry will have to miss a minimum of three weeks.
The roster elevations are possibly a good sign for the health of Patriots wide receiver Nelson Agholor and safety Jalen Mills, who both practiced in a limited capacity on Wednesday and Friday and sat out on Thursday. Both are working through ankle injuries, but appear to have a chance to play. Agholor, Mills, tackle Yodny Cajuste (hamstring), and linebacker Ronnie Perkins (shoulder) are all questionable for Sunday’s game.
New England kicks off the 2021 season at 4:25 p.m. ET on Sunday against the Miami Dolphins at Gillette Stadium. You can hear the call of the game on 98.5 The Sports Hub, starting with pregame at 1:30.
