Many Patriots fans are waiting for news that the team had a pre-draft meeting with BYU’s quarterback Zach Wilson. That hasn’t happened, at least not yet, but we now know the team has spoken with his college roommate and top receiver.

According to Justin Melo of The Draft Network, the Patriots are one of nine teams who are schedule to virtually meet with BYU receiver Dax Milne (rhymes with kiln). Milne is currently projected as a priority UDFA, although his stock has risen as of late and is starting to appear on some mock drafts as a late Day 3 pick.

After making the team as a walk-on in 2018 and playing a reserve role in his first two seasons in Provo, Milne had a breakout junior year in 2020. His 70 catches and 1,188 yards led the Cougars, while his eight touchdown catches were second on the team. He also carried the ball 11 times for 67 yards. Milne is on the recently-released list of players who would have been invited to this year’s NFL Combine, which is being held virtually due to COVID-19.

Whichever teams adds Milne will be acquiring a project, but he represents the kind of project the Patriots generally invest in. Milne is a strong route runner who knows how to separate at the top of his route. He’s more quick than fast, and in college played bigger than his size (6-foot-1, 190 pounds) which allowed him to succeed in contested-catch situations. His resume also boasts special teams experience, which mostly came as a sophomore.

Other teams who have reportedly set up meetings with Milne include the Bills, WFT, 49ers, Broncos, Colts, Chargers, Jaguars, and Seahawks. If he does get his name called in April, he’ll be the first BYU wide receiver taken in the draft since Austin Collie in 2009.
