  • Malcolm Butler’s season appeared to be over when the Patriots’ placed him on season-ending IR last week with an undisclosed injury. Now, his time with the team is over.

According to multiple reports, the Patriots reached an injury settlement with Butler on Thursday. That move facilitates his release, making him a free agent once again.

  • Butler came out of retirement to sign a two-year deal with the Patriots back in March. The 32-year-old was expected to compete for a rotational cornerback role.

This was his second stint with the Patriots. He first signed with them as a UDFA in 2014 and spent four seasons in New England, including an All-Pro year in 2017, but time with the Patriots is probably best known for his game-sealing interception at the end of Super Bowl XLIX.

Because Butler was released with an injury settlement and not outright, the cap implications of the move are unclear according to salary cap expert Miguel Benzan (Patscap). Butler’s original deal carried a $2.2 million dollar cap hit in 2022, with $500,000 as dead cap.
