  • Monday night, it was reported that the Patriots and Mac Jones are “discussing options and the best way to proceed” after Jones was diagnosed with a high ankle sprain – an injury he suffered in the team’s loss to Baltimore on Sunday. We’re now learning that process includes getting a second opinion.

    According to

Per sources, Mac Jones is seeking a 2nd opinion on his high ankle sprain with Dr. Martin O'Malley of NYHSS, a foot and ankle specialist& team doctor for the Brooklyn Nets. Dr. O'Malley recently did JC Jackson's ankle surgery. He also operated on Kevin Durant's Achilles in 2019.

Martin O’Malley of the New York Hospital for Special Surgery for another look at his left ankle. O’Malley is the team Orthopedist for the Brooklyn Nets, team physician for USA Basketball, and is also a foot and ankle consultant for the New York Giants as well as the New York City Ballet. He performed ankle surgery on former Patriots cornerback J.C. Jackson earlier this year, and also operated on Kevin Durant’s Achilles in 2019.

  • Although he is meeting with a surgical specialist, Jones may be trying to avoid surgery. On NFL Network Tuesday afternoon, Tom Pelissero noted that “the choices here for Mac Jones are rehabbing from this injury, which I’m told is his preference, or potentially undergoing surgery.” In the same segment, Mike Garafolo added that “every expectation I’ve got is that there won’t be surgery right now — or at least that was the hope as of yesterday. Rehab, rest, and he’ll get back eventually.”

If Jones does undergo surgery, it would likely be the ‘tightrope‘ surgery made popular at Alabama a few years ago. Without surgery, the typical time to return from a high ankle sprain is six to eight weeks.

Brian Hoyer is expected to start this Sunday for the Patriots. He and Bailey Zappe are the only two other quarterbacks currently on the Patriots’ roster.
