  • As early as Sunday night, it was speculated that Mac Jones had suffered a sprained ankle. ESPN’s Adam Schefter confirmed those speculations Monday night, tweeting that Jones “has what doctors diagnosed as a severe high ankle sprain.”

Schefter added that the injury “would cause many to have surgery” but that “Jones and the Patriots still are discussing his options and the best way to proceed.” This follows a report from NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero earlier in the day that Jones got a second opinion on the injury. Even with that though, Schefter noted that Jones “is likely to miss multiple games.”

  • In the past, high ankle sprains held players out for up to multiple months. However, the new ‘Tightrope‘ surgery made popular at Jones’ alma mater Alabama can cut that down to just a few weeks. Jones was asked on Monday if that surgery was under consideration for his case, but declined to answer.

Either way, Jones will likely have to miss multiple games. Veteran Brian Hoyer is the presumed starter, having dressed for the first three games of the season while rookie fourth-round pick Bailey Zappe has been inactive.

Short of another news update, the next ‘check-in’ on Jones’ status should come on Wednesday. We’ll see whether or not he is at practice, and if/how he is listed on the injury report.
