On Sunday the New England Patriots play their final game of the 2023 season against the New York Jets. Quarterback Mac Jones most likely won’t be a part of it.

Jones, a 2021 first-round pick, lost the starting job to Bailey Zappe back in late November. However he had remained the team’s backup quarterback and continued to be active on game days. That changed for the finale.

An inside look at Mac Jones’ 2023 downfall

Ahead of Sunday’s game the Patriots announced their inactive players for the game. That list included Jones, who is designated as the emergency third quarterback. That means he’ll dress but would only be able to enter the game if both Zappe and new backup Nathan Rourke – who was signed in mid-December – both leave the game due to injury.

For all intents and purposes, Jones is not on the gameday roster. That’s an ominous sign for the 25-year-old, ahead of what is a crucial offseason for both himself and the team.

  • Jones will be entering the final concrete year of his rookie contract in 2024. As a first-round pick his deal does include a fifth-year option, which the Patriots have to decide to pick up or decline by this May’s deadline.

With the clock coming to an end on Jones’ rookie contract, which has been a tumultuous three years, change at the quarterback position seems likely for the Patriots. That change could be expedited if the team has a new general manager/head coach combo that wants to start building its own core.

Could Jones be done sooner than his contract duration? Making him inactive could be seen as a sign the team is, for lack of a better term, done with him at this point.

Jones wouldn’t be the only member of his draft class to go through a parting of ways this offseason. Sunday morning reports indicated the Jets will look to trade Zach Wilson this offseason, while Justin Fields’ future in Chicago is up in the air with the Bears holding the top pick in a favorable quarterback draft. Trey Lance, who was also a first round pick in that class, was traded at the start of this season.
