  • Do the Celtics have a Marcus Smart problem?

Felger: Another crucial, crucial possession ending in a Marcus Smart shot. Mazz, who led the Celtics in fourth quarter attempts yesterday?

Mazz: Marcus Smart had six shots.

Felger: Who has led the Celtics in fourth quarter attempts this series?

Mazz: Marcus Smart.15 shots in the four games. Jaylen Brown has taken eight.

Felger: Am I the only one who thinks that’s a problem?

    Mazz: Definitely not.

Felger: That meaning that’s a problem. This is the Marcus Smart problem. Mazz, and I’m sorry to….

Mazz: No, no, you’re putting me on the spot, but I use this device.

Felger: Well, these are easy answers.

    Mazz: Hopefully, I’m prepared.

Felger: Unlike you I’m giving you answers. I’m giving you questions we can all answer they’re rhetorical. Why is Marcus Smart leading you in attempts?

Mazz: Because they’re doubling off of him.

    Felger: No one covers him!

    Mazz: Correct.

  • Felger: They leave him open. So, of course! And they embolden him. The fragile ego and the neediness of Marcus Smart, they’ve fed it for years and they continue to. “Marcus, if it’s open, we’re good with you taking that shot. We want you taking that shot”. So you get in these late game situations, of course the opponent is going to help off of Marcus Smart because he’s your worst shooter. So if you’re playing team basketball and finding the open man, the ball is going to find its way to Marcus Smart, which means we are in this endless purgatory of being in these late game situations and the ball finding its way to Marcus Smart for an open three. Eventually he’s going to hit one, it’s just the law of averages, but that’s what you are destined to. That is your fate Celtics fans get ready for it. Another month and a half if you make it, or another five years if he stays, of big game after big game coming down to the opponent helping off of Marcus Smart, you kicking the ball to Marcus Smart and now we all have to sit there and watch him take an open shot with the game on the line. Usually he’ll miss, every now and then he’ll make. But that’s it. That’s what you’re destined to. There’s only one solution. There’s only one way out of the Marcus Smart vortex. The Marcus Smart “Mind F”. What do we call this Murray? Like this box. We’re in this Marcus Smart box of hell.

    Jim Murray: The Smart conundrum.

Felger: The Smart conundrum where if he’s on the floor, you need a basket at the end, the opponent’s going to help off of Marcus Smart, he’s going to be open, the ball’s going to find his way to him, and he’s going to take the shot. This is the life we are going to be living now until what, Mazz?

    Mazz: Hell

    Felger: No.

    Jim Murray: You trade him?

Mazz: Until they take him out?

Mazz: Take him off the floor.
