One of the most important yet under-the-radar steps of the NFL Draft process takes place this week. 134 of the top prospects from this year’s draft class will converge on Mobile, Alabama for the Senior Bowl.
The Senior Bowl is more than just a college all-star game. It’s a chance for pro teams to get a close look at players they may be considering in April’s Draft. On top of the three practice days Tuesday to Thursday and game on Saturday where scouts can get a look at players on the field, decision makers can speak with players officially and unofficially. Players are split into two rosters, ‘American’ and ‘National.’
For the Patriots, this week holds heightened importance. Since 2008, 49 of the Patriots’ 124 draft picks (39.5 percent) have been Senior Bowl participants, averaging 3.5 such picks per year. Odds are, at least a couple of the players on the field in Mobile this week will end up on the Patriots roster in a few months.
Keeping that in mind, which players should Patriots fans be keeping an eye on this week? Here’s a a breakdown of the names to know, position-by-position.
Note: James Cook, Jahan Dotson, Josh Paschal, Devin Lloyd, and Quay Walker were not present at weigh-ins on Monday. It’s not confirmed whether or not they will participate the rest of the week.
