MLS has announced the schedule for the MLS Cup playoffs, including details on the New England Revolution’s opening round match against reigning champions Atlanta United.
The seventh seeded Revs will visit Atlanta, the second seed in the Eastern Conference, on October 19 at 3 p.m. MLS has changed the playoff format to single elimination this year .
The Revs wrapped up the regular season with a 3-1 loss Sunday on the road at Atlanta, a match that head coach Bruce Arena called “a dress rehearsal.”
The playoff appearance comes in the wake of a remarkable turnaround for the Revs, who were in last place in the Eastern Conference when former head coach Brad Friedel and general manager Mike Burns were fired in May. The team lost just three matches after Arena took over coaching duties in June.
It marks the first playoff appearance for the Revs since 2015. The franchise has won five Eastern Conference championships but has been unable to hoist the MLS Cup.
Arena is the all-time leader in MLS postseason wins with 32 and has won five MLS cups.
