Taylor Twellman on Revs’ playoff Chances: “Anything can happen”
Following a month-long pause in the 2024 Major League Soccer calendar, the New England Revolution will make their return to league play tonight with a visit north of the border to face CF Montreal.
Tonight’s match, a 7:30 p.m. kickoff at Stade Saputo, is the first of 11 games remaining in the regular season for New England. Revolution legend and MLS Season Pass lead analyst Taylor Twellman joined DJ Bean on “The Soccer Show” this morning to preview the crucial final stretch of the regular season.
The Revolution currently sit in last place in the Eastern Conference, five points back of the playoff line. But with a revamped roster featuring four new acquisitions during a record-setting summer transfer window and multiple key players returning from injuries, New England is well-positioned to push for its fifth postseason appearance over the last six years.
“The majority of their games are against teams in the East,” Twellman said. “If you’re in last place, there’s only one place to go and that’s up. So, you do control where you finish, in that sense.”
New England strengthened its roster with two international newcomers in 22-year-old Argentinian forward Luca Langoni, acquired via the MLS U22 Initiative on a club-record transfer fee, and 24-year-old Nigerian midfielder Alhassan Yusuf. On the defensive end, the club added two MLS defenders in 10-year veteran Tim Parker and 24-year-old Will Sands, but in the process, let go of two fan favorites to help clear up cap space: defenders DeJuan Jones and Henry Kessler.
“I understand the moves and why they made them, salary cap reasons and bringing in maybe a different look for Caleb Porter,” Twellman said. “For a new manager to come in that is a lot different from the previous manager and previous regime, you have to give him time to then get in his players and to see what that looks like.
“I don’t think it’s at all a full picture in the moment. I think the deals that were made now were to set up a winter transfer window that could be very fruitful for this team.”
In the meantime, anything is possible for a Revolution team hungry to claw its way above the playoff line.
“Sporting Kansas City last year convinced me that anything can happen,” Twellman said. “They had arguably the worst start in franchise history, let alone league history, and then went into the playoffs, made it, and defeated the No. 1 seed St. Louis City.”

Twellman will be back in Foxborough on Saturday, September 7, when the Revolution will host their annual Concussion Awareness match in partnership with ThinkTaylor.
