Will Sands: Revs are “poised for a very dangerous run”
New England Revolution defender Will Sands couldn’t have asked for a better outcome in his first MLS match with his new club. Sands, acquired via trade with the Columbus Crew on July 31, suited up for his first start with the Revolution in last weekend’s 5-0 clean sheet win over CF Montreal.
The 24-year-old outside back joined DJ Bean on “The Soccer Show” this morning to discuss New England’s mindset heading into the final stretch of the regular season and his first impressions of the Revolution.
“It was definitely a good start,” Sands said of last weekend’s victory in Montreal. “You feel a good energy in the locker room, some good momentum going into that game, and we just hope we’ll keep it going.”
For Sands, adjusting to joining a new club was aided by a talent-heavy Revolution roster that is positioned to make noise through the final 10 games of the 2024 MLS campaign.
“Switching any team is always a little bit difficult just because it’s a new system, new culture and everything kind of involved in the foundation of the club is different,” Sands said. “However, that being said, you can clearly see the talent on the roster. I think the Revs are poised for a very dangerous run at the end of the season. I think we can do something very special in the playoffs. I’m looking forward to seeing that happen.”
Sands’ transition to New England is also aided by his reunion with Revolution Head Coach Caleb Porter. The defender and head coach crossed paths during Sands’ rookie MLS season with the Columbus Crew in 2022.
“Caleb has a very clear vision of the game,” Sands said. “He really likes to win, that’s something I really appreciate. That’s something that as a team you really try to push for. He knows how to get results. Once you get on the same page, I think anything is possible.”
With last weekend’s victory, the Revolution now find themselves just two points below the playoff line in the Eastern Conference. Another road win tonight at Real Salt Lake could see the Revolution leap back into the postseason picture- an expectation the Revolution are laser-focused on reaching.
“It’s really who gets hot at the end of the year,” Sands said. “I think this team with players coming back from injury and the momentum after that game in Montreal, very dangerous position to be in. I think we can make a very big run at the end of the year and into the playoffs.”
Tonight’s match kicks off at 9:30 p.m. ET and airs on MLS Season Pass on the Apple TV app in English and Spanish. Brad Feldman and Charlie Davies will call the match on New England’s local radio call here on 98.5 The Sports Hub.
