DeBrusk scores in return to Boston, Canucks shut out Bruins 2-0
Former Bruins winger Jake DeBrusk scored all the offense his new team needed on Tuesday, as the Vancouver Canucks shut out Boston by a 2-0 final at TD Garden.
It was a night of missed opportunities for the Bruins, who lost despite out-shooting the Canucks 33-15 on the night. At five-on-five, they had a staggering 27-8 advantage in scoring chances, and 13-1 in high-danger chances. They’re now 2-1 in three games under interim head coach Joe Sacco.
The first period was scoreless, and in fact, it took a while for anyone to even register a shot on goal, as both defenses kept opportunities to the outside and made clean breakouts. David Pastrnak got the first puck on net seven minutes into regulation. Boston ended up out-shooting Vancouver 9-3 in the first, with a 4-0 edge in high-danger chances.
It took a power play for either team to finally find the back of the net, and it came for the Canucks after Brad Marchand got whistled for a crosscheck. DeBrusk got his new team on the board after teammate Conor Garland batted a point shot by Quinn Hughes and the puck bounced perfectly to DeBrusk at the crease, where he tucked in the rebound with ease.
The Bruins challenged for what appeared to be a high-stick or a hand pass prior to the goal, but the officials ruled that the call on the ice stood, giving the Canucks a 1-0 lead. The Bruins also had to kill off a delay of game penalty after losing the challenge.
Boston out-shot Vancouver 11-6 in the third period, and got two power play opportunities, but came away with nothing to show for it.
Up Next: The Bruins will get back to work on Black Friday, when they take on the Pittsburgh Penguins at TD Garden.
