Former RedSox Playing In October
Major League Baseball is one round away from the fall classic as teams battle it out in the league championship and meet in the World Series. Eleven years ago the Red Sox won the World Series and went on to win another five years later. Now they are on the outside looking in as the Yankees and Guardians meet in the American League. And the Dodgers and Mets play in the National league. As someone who loved the Red Sox as a kid, It’s tough to watch both baseball teams from New York playing this late into the season.
It’s also tough to see many former members of the Red Sox playing for teams battling for a championship. Mookie Betts is the one that hurts the most, who single handedly lead the Dodgers passed the Padres and former teammate Xander Bogarts. Then there was Kiki Hernandez, who hit a homerun in the ALDS and looked like a tool after asking if they were live on TV just to swear. In the American League, the Yankees are close to another appearance in the World Series and Alex Verdugo has been a part of it. Traded this offseason, Verdugo had his struggles but has 3 hits so far in the postseason. The Yankees eliminated the Royals who had a liter of former Red Sox in Hunter Renfroe, Michael Wacha, Tommy Pham and Jon Schreiber.
The Mets are have been a really good story. Winning the Wild Card on a Pete Alonso home run and dispatching Kyle Schwarber and the Phillies. It was only four years ago that Schwarber was playing for Boston in a on game playoff against the Yankees at Fenway Park. JD Martinez also got into the mix playing for the Mets and has been a nice fit in the middle of the lineup. The other player who is still going in Jose Iglesias, once a top prospect in the stem. He had multiple stops in Boston and has been a part of the Mets journey this postseason.
A few other players not mentioned who are on rosters, Ryan Brasier started Game 5 for the Dodgers as the team went on to the ALCS. Adam Ottavino is on the Mets roster but has not made an appearance. While Boston isn’t participating in the postseason, there are still a number of former Red Sox players you can root for
