The Celtics will have extra time to get ready for the NBA Finals
Thanks to their sweep and the 2024 NBA Finals schedule, the Boston Celtics will have some time to rest before Game 1 of the championship series.
Throughout this year’s Boston Celtics playoff run, a big theme for the team has been ‘rest.’ Thanks to their five-game series wins, the Celtics got just about a full week off between Rounds 1 and 2 and Rounds 2 and 3.
With their sweep of the Indiana Pacers in the Eastern Conference Finals completed on Monday night, the Celtics have once again bought themselves significant time off. No matter what happens in the Western Conference Finals (the Dallas Mavericks lead the Minnesota Timberwolves 3-0 heading into Game 4 tomorrow) the NBA Finals schedule won’t begin until Tuesday, June 6. That means the Celtics will have nine days off before they step on the floor again.
2024 NBA Finals schedule (all times p.m. ET):
Game 1: Thursday, June 6 at 8:30
Game 2: Sunday, June 9 at 8:00
Game 3: Wednesday, June 12 at 8:30
Game 4: Friday, June 14 at 8:30
Game 5: Monday, June 17 at 8:30*
Game 6: Thursday, June 20 at 8:30*
Game 7: Sunday, June 23 at 8:00*
*If necessary
That extra rest could be especially helpful given the Celtics’ strategy when it came to their rotation in the closeout game. In Game 4 the Celtics had just 32 minutes taken by bench players (14 by Sam Hauser, nine each from Payton Pritchard and Xavier Tillman) leaning on the starters to close the game out. Four of the five starters played at least 40 minutes with Jrue Holiday playing 38 while dealing with an illness.
Part of the reason the Celtics’ bench was so short was injuries – especially in the front court. Center Kristaps Porzingis remains out. It was reported earlier in the series he was expected to return for Game 4 but didn’t, although he’ll now have extra time to rehab from a calf strain. The Celtics also didn’t play center Luke Kornet on Monday night despite the fact he was cleared after missing Games 2 and 3 with a wrist injury.

In the NBA Finals – which will be the Celtics’ second title appearance in three years – they’ll most likely play the Mavericks. That’ll set up a matchup between the C’s and Kyrie Irving, who played for the Celtics from 2017 to 2019 before leaving on unceremonious terms and joining the rival Brooklyn Nets. Irving has lost his last 10 games against the Celtics.
During the regular season this year the Celtics won both head-to-head games against the Mavericks. They won 119-110 in Dallas in late January, then picked up a 138-110 win in Boston in early March. The Celtics also won both games against Dallas last year.
