Celtics get a surprise in 2023-2024 All-NBA voting
Jayson Tatum is back on the All-NBA First Team, but this time Jaylen Brown isn’t joining him on the All-NBA roster.
The All-NBA teams for the 2023-2024 NBA season was announced on Wednesday afternoon ahead of Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals. For the Celtics, this year’s voting included a surprise.
Like last year, forward Jayson Tatum was named first-team All-NBA. However, forward Jaylen Brown won’t be joining him on the All-NBA roster this year – he was the first player on the outside looking in at the results.
For Tatum, this is his third year in a row receiving first-team All-NBA honors. It’s also the fourth time in his career he’s been voted to an All-NBA team – he was third-team in 2020. Tatum is the first Celtics to get first-team All-NBA honors three years in a row since Larry Bird, who did so for nine years in a row in the 80s.
In 2023-2024 Tatum’s scoring took a bit of a dip from last year – he went from averaging 30.1 points per game to 26.9 – but he was a more efficient player. He shot 47.1 percent from the floor, his best shooting season since his rookie year. Tatum, 26, also averaged a career-high 4.9 assists and 8.1 rebounds per game.
By nature of his last few All-NBA nods, Tatum will be eligible for the Supermax when he becomes eligible for a contract extension this summer. That contract is expected to be worth $315 million.
Brown signed his super max extension last year after he was named to the All-NBA second-team – his first All-NBA recognition of his career. At the time it was the largest contract in NBA history. By not making any of the three teams this year, he loses out on $2.2 million this year.
This season, Brown averaged 23 points per game while shooting 49.9 percent from the floor and 35.4 percent from three. The 27-year-old added 5.5 rebounds, 3.6 assists, and 1.2 steals per game.
Tatum, Brown, and the Celtics will be back on the floor on Thursday night for Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Finals against the Indiana Pacers, as they try to take a 2-0 series lead. Coverage of that game can be heard on the BetMGM 98.5 The Sports Hub Celtics Radio Network, starting with pregame with Sean Grande and Cedric Maxwell at 7:30 p.m. ET.
