Bruins offer latest on status of Brad Marchand for Friday’s do-or-die Game 6
The Bruins don’t want to make anything official when it comes team captain Brad Marchand.
Injured in the first period of last Friday’s Game 3 on a punch from Sam Bennett, and pulled from the game after the second period of play with what the team has called an upper-body injury, Marchand has been doing his best to work back into action for the B’s, while the Bruins have tried to be as patient as possible given the obvious nature of the injury.
Ahead of the team’s Monday afternoon flight to Florida for Tuesday’s Game 5, Bruins general manager Don Sweeney said that the Bruins had to “give their captain a chance.” Marchand then skated during the team’s morning skate at Amerant Bank Arena, and though he did not play, a 2-1 win over the Panthers gave Marchand that chance, with Friday’s Game 6 immediately considered a possibility.
That possibility only intensified on Thursday, too, with Marchand on the ice and a full participant (involved in every drill and situational portion) for the B’s practice at Brighton’s Warrior Ice Arena.
“I will say he looked good, but he’s got boxes to check,” Bruins head coach Jim Montgomery said when asked about Marchand’s availability. “Day-to-day, and we have the extra day, which is beneficial, for all of our players with bumps and bruises that they have. We’ll know more [Friday].”
Marchand, who spent Thursday’s practice to the left of Charlie Coyle and Trent Frederic on what would be considered Boston’s second line, took a similar approach when asked about his status.
“Hopefully,” Marchand said of potentially jumping back into action for Game 6.. “I’m just going through the steps and, let’s see how [Friday] goes. But, hopefully.
“It’s very tough to watch this time of year. You know, you want to be part of it. It’s great to get back out there and to be around the energy and in the emotion, and be with the rest of the guys.”
The Bruins played Tuesday’s Game 5 with Marchand’s jersey hung in his locker stall in the visitor’s dressing room, and made it clear that they wanted to get the win to give him a chance to suit up again.
Should that happen in Game 6, the Bruins know there’s not a way to quantify the lift it could give a Bruins team looking to force a Game 7 down in Sunrise.
“You can’t put a number on it percentage-wise., can’t put a number on it emotionally,” Montgomery said of a potential Marchand return. “He’s our leader, he’s our captain. He’s our heart and soul. Like, how do you put a number on that?”
