Did the Patriots reach for WR Ja’Lynn Polk in the draft? This might explain things
The New England Patriots addressed a big need at wide receiver during the 2024 NFL Draft on Friday, but may have raised some eyebrows when their choice was Ja’Lynn Polk out of Washington with the 37th overall pick.
Polk’s skill set – versatility, contested catch ability, combined with a lack of elite speed – doesn’t exactly scream “No. 1 receiver.” So anyone who expected the Patriots to land their future star wideout at 37th overall may believe they reached for him.
However, a new report suggests that the Pats needed to pounce on Polk when they had the chance. According to I heard from a couple teams last week that were interested in potentially getting Washington WR Ja'Lynn Polk in the back half of the second round. The Patriots just took him at No. 37. Might look early based on pre-draft rankings, but teams were definitely lurking.

Polk does have good size at 6-foot-1 and 203 pounds and is universally praised for his hands and body control, which have allowed him to compensate for a lack of breakaway speed by making a lot of contested catches. He played both inside and outside at Washington, and projects as a versatile piece for the Patriots’ rebuilding offense.
“He’s a guy that we had our eye on for a while. He’s a really good fit in our offense,” Patriots director of scouting Eliot Wolf. “He’s really tough, he’s strong, he can run all the routes, play inside-outside. He’s a good blocker. He’s really competitive, both for the ball in the air and as a run-after-catch player. He’s really just kind of a versatile, do-everything type guy.
“He ran a little bit faster than a lot of people expected, but when you turn the tape on, you see him running by people. So, definitely excited to add him to the mix.”

Based on Polk’s introductory press conference, the Patriots also prioritized him because of his football character. “Culture” has been a theme of their off-season, and Polk seems to fit that.
“Man, they’re getting a beast,” Polk said of the Patriots. “A dude that loves football, loves his teammates. I’m ready to build, be able to bring a great player and a very electric person, and go on and win games.”
Polk will really need to prove to have rare intangibles, and refine his route-running to perfection, to elevate himself to a true No. 1 receiver role. That may make him a disappointing pick for some. But he’s not much of a reach. He was projected to go in the second round in a lot of scouting reports and mock drafts, and as Howe’s report illustrated, if the Patriots didn’t take him at 37, they probably would’ve lost out on a guy they were targeting.
It’s OK to reach a little bit sometimes, if it’s a player you covet. The Patriots coveted Polk. Time is needed to find out if they were right or wrong to feel that way.
