Bruins, Maple Leafs make goalie decisions for Game 1
The game within the game continued on into Saturday morning for both the Bruins and Maple Leafs.
In what’s always a tightlipped time of year, be it for health reasons or lineup tinkering, the greatest secret for the Bruins has been their plan in net, and namely who will get the call for the first game of this first-round series.
On Thursday, Bruins general manager Don Sweeney admitted that while he knew the plan, but that he was not going to share it with the media. Bruins head coach Jim Montgomery continued that trend Friday, and again on Saturday, with Montgomery noting during his morning skate availability that Boston’s goalie tonight would be in pads.
But Saturday’s pregame warmup has come with the confirmation that the Bruins will turn to Jeremy Swayman in goal.
The decision to go with Swayman continues what was a 26-game rotation to end the regular season, as the basic logic indicated that it was Swayman’s turn to start after Linus Ullmark got the call for the regular season finale.
While Swayman went through some obvious highs and lows during the second half of the season after earning an All-Star nod for his strong first-half showing, Swayman seemingly ended his season on a positive. Given the call four times over the final eight games of the season, Swayman posted a .919 save percentage over his final four appearances of Boston’s 82-game grind, and with two goals or fewer surrendered in three of those four starts.
The 25-year-old Swayman was phenomenal against the Leafs during the regular season, with three wins and a .959 save percentage in three showdowns with the Maple Leafs.
This will be Swayman’s first Game 1 start for the Bruins.
The Maple Leafs are expected to counter with Ilya Samsonov.
Samsonov is coming into the postseason with an .890 save percentage in 40 appearances this season, and though his April featured three wins in five outings, it also came with an unsightly .865 save percentage.
