The New England Patriots wide receiver depth chart needs a real upgrade. According to head coach Jerod Mayo, it’s still possible that could happen before the draft.
Mayo spoke openly and at length about a wide variety of topics on Monday morning, when he met with reporters at the annual AFC coaches breakfast during the NFL league meeting in Orlando. He was asked whether the Patriots are still open to making a trade for a wide receiver, as free agency gets further in the rearview mirror.

The head coach kept that possibility alive for the team, while also emphasizing that the Patriots still looking toward the 2024 NFL Draft to improve the team, likely at wide receiver.

“We’re still open on the trade market, but I would also say this is a pretty deep [draft] class as far as receivers are concerned,” Mayo said. “So, it’s all on the table right now. And hopefully, as we continue to get closer to the draft, you know, [Eliot Wolf]’s fielding calls. The scouts are fielding calls. But as we get closer to the draft, it starts to be a clearer picture. That’s really the goal.”
Frankly, the picture isn’t any clearer for those following Mayo and the Patriots at the moment. Mayo seems willing to say anything about anything. It’s like he’s trying to confuse with information overload. A tangle of verbal smokescreens.

That’s what this time of year is all about in the NFL, anyway. Pre-draft talk is commonly referred to as “the lying season” for a reason. But preferably, Mayo isn’t lying about the Patriots’ search for a new wide receiver, because higher-end talent is a must at that position.
They may yet get that in the draft, but a trade would ensure a more established piece, as opposed to the unknown of a rookie. What about both? That may be tough with just this year’s draft capital.
Just know that as far as Mayo is concerned, absolutely anything could happen with the Patriots. Hopefully, whatever they end up doing, it includes improvement at receiver.

Barth's Patriots Mock Draft 2.0: Getting aggressive

When we did our first Patriots Mock Draft of the offseason back in February, there was still a lot we didn’t know. The Patriots were still in the process of filling out their new coaching staff, the team hadn’t definitively named a head of personnel, and the pre-draft process was just beginning.
Fast forward over a month, and a lot has happened. With Eilot Wolf leading the way the Patriots have assembled a full coaching staff. Meanwhile all the prospects have been through the NFL Combine and most have had their pro days.

There was also NFL free agency, which certainly changes the landscape. In our initial mock draft we had to project some moves for the Patriots (namely signing a big-name wide receiver), most of which did not happen. Instead, the Patriots mostly retained players in free agency, making only minor targeted additions.
That strategy points to one thing – the Patriots are all in on the draft. Wolf’s Packer Way plan of ‘draft and develop’ won’t get an initial boost from free agency. Rather, the goal appears to be trying to find multiple core foundational players in this draft.
With the third overall pick at their disposal, the Patriots are in position to add at least one such player. But could they get aggressive and improve their chances at adding a second? We’ll look into that and more as we get into Patriots Mock Draft 2.0…
