The Soccer Show – Carles Gil: “I need to give more to this club”
New England Revolution playmaker Carles Gil is here to stay.
On Thursday, the club announced that Gil inked a long-term contract extension to remain in a Revolution uniform through the end of the 2026 MLS season with an additional one-year club option.
Gil joined DJ Bean on “The Soccer Show” this morning to discuss the factors behind his decision to re-sign with the Revolution and his aspirations for the club moving forward.
“It’s very special for me,” Gil said of extending his tenure with the Revolution. “After many years here, to continue here means that we are very happy together. We are enjoying our time. I feel that I have more to give to this club. And that’s what I want, to continue helping the team be a better team, and try to win trophies.”
Gil, who arrived in New England in 2019, made it clear that he had no intention of taking his talents elsewhere. The 31-year-old midfielder from Spain has a long list of individual accolades on his resume including the 2021 MLS MVP and Comeback Player of the Year Awards, MLS Best XI selections in 2019 and 2021, and consecutive MLS All-Star selections over the last three seasons.
But what remains on the back of his mind is clear: guiding New England to its first MLS Cup title.
“This is my place,” Gil, New England’s captain, said. “I enjoy it. I know everything here. And the most important thing for me is that I feel I need to give more to this club. Not just win the Supporters’ Shield, but try to win more trophies. That’s why I’m here and that’s why I want to stay more years.”
Off the field, Gil is now raising a family in Boston with his wife, Maria, and one-year-old son, Marco. Ensuring that his family was happy with remaining in Boston for the foreseeable future played a key role in Gil’s decision to re-sign with the Revolution.
“I think we live in an incredible area in Seaport,” Gil said. “It’s our home. In Spain, we have our family there, but our home is here. We spend many months here during the year. We like everything here.”
With first-year Head Coach Caleb Porter at the helm, the Revolution are continuing to implement novel concepts on the field as the club embarks on a new era. Gil said the relationship between captain and head coach was nothing but positive from day one.
“I’m very happy with Caleb,” Gil said. “We had a very good call in the beginning to meet each other and talk about our team. I think we’re having a very good start. Maybe not with the results in MLS that we’ve wanted but we’re on a good way, competing in the games. We didn’t have luck in the first game with the red card. We deserved something better against Toronto, but we’re showing what type of team we are in Concacaf [Champions Cup].”
Although the Revolution are only two games into the new MLS season, Gil is confident that the pieces are in place for New England to add to its trophy case in 2024.
“We’re there,” Gil said of the Revs’ ability to compete for titles this season. “We’re there because honestly, we have the talent. Sometimes it’s the small details. Maybe the moment that you arrive to the playoffs you’re healthy. It’s the small details. Every year, the small details make the difference. But we’re there.”
New England continues its MLS season with a visit to Atlanta United on Saturday night at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Listen to the 7:30 p.m. ET contest on 98.5 The Sports Hub with Brad Feldman and Charlie Davies calling the match.
