Revolution host Toronto FC in MLS home opener on Sunday
The start of the 2024 campaign for the New England Revolution has been a busy one. New England’s jam-packed schedule has seen the Revolution play its first three competitive matches over an eight-day window to kick off the new season.
It continues Sunday afternoon for the Revolution, when the club hosts Toronto FC in New England’s MLS home opener at Gillette Stadium.
New England eyes its first points of the MLS campaign after dropping the season opener at D.C. United last weekend, 3-1. The Revolution, already weary from a mid-week trip to Panama, were placed at an even bigger disadvantage when forward Giacomo Vrioni was sent off in 25th minute. Still, New England managed to keep the match competitive, finding an equalizer in the second half off the foot of Carles Gil, but D.C. had the last laugh as Christian Benteke finished off his hat trick with a pair of late goals to secure the win for United.
“All the things we had to deal with, and we were 71 minutes in at 1-1 against D.C. United, down a man from the 25th minute,” said Revolution Head Coach Caleb Porter. “So, I think that’s a testament to their character and that’s something they shouldn’t forget.”
The Revolution look to extend their unbeaten run against Toronto to six games (3-0-2) dating back to 2021. New England has been formidable in home openers over its first 28 seasons, boasting a 17-6-5 record, including a 13-4-5 mark at Gillette Stadium since the building opened in 2002.
Last season, New England made history matching its most home wins in a season, going 12-1-4 over 17 regular season matches. The Revs set a new club record for most home points earned in a season (40), becoming only the 17th team in league history to reach that total in a 34-game season.
“Just to be in market, in your own home, sleep in your own bed, be around your family, that work-life balance is important,” said Porter. “We want to get off to a good start in all of our home games. It’s our first time in front of the supporters and we want to make a good impression.”
Sunday’s match kicks off at 2:00 p.m. Tune into the contest on 98.5 The Sports Hub HD2, called by Brad Feldman and Charlie Davies.
