The New England Patriots’ early-season roster shuffle continues at quarterback behind Mac Jones.
New England announced Monday that they’ve released quarterbacks Matt Corral and Ian Book. According to Jeff Howe of The Athletic, “Neither were deemed a fit after short stints at practice.”
Corral was released from the exempt/left squad list, while the Patriots waived Book from the practice squad. Claimed off waivers from the Carolina Panthers earlier this month, Corral was on the Patriots’ 53-man roster before being moved to the exempt/left squad list, after he reportedly stopped showing up to practice.
Book signed to the Patriots’ practice squad on Sept. 13, so his Patriots career appears to have lasted all of five days. He last played in an NFL game in 2021 for the Philadelphia Eagles.
Bailey Zappe remains the main backup quarterback behind Jones through two regular season games. Undrafted rookie Malik Cunningham also remains on the Patriots’ practice squad. Cunningham is listed on the Patriots roster as a quarterback, despite spending the majority of training camp practicing as a wide receiver.

Jones has an 88.3 passer rating through two games. He’s completed 68.8 percent of his passes for 547 yards, four touchdown passes, and two interceptions. His own decisions have played a role in his passer rating, but he’s also worked with spotty blocking in front of him on a banged-up, patchwork offensive line, and made plus throws that the receivers couldn’t complete.
Ultimately, despite all the wacky shuffling at the bottom of the quarterback depth chart, the New England Patriots are back to where they were throughout the summer. Jones is the starter, and if he doesn’t play, Zappe is the next man up.
