Patriots reportedly adding another quarterback to the mix
The New England Patriots are adding another quarterback to their group to back up Mac Jones and Bailey Zappe.
As first reported by Doug Kyed of the Boston Herald, the Patriots are signing former Eagles and Saints quarterback Ian Book to the practice squad. Book, 25, was last active for an NFL game in Week 16 of the 2021 season for New Orleans.
That game was, in fact, Book’s only NFL appearance. He did play, going 12-of-20 for 135 yards, no touchdowns, and two interceptions in a 20-3 loss to the Miami Dolphins. So, Book’s status as an NFL quarterback is certainly hanging by a thread.
Book was originally a fourth-round draft pick of the Saints in 2021. He is much better known for his time at Notre Dame, when he compiled a 147.0 passer rating in four seasons.
The signing comes after the Patriots re-signed Zappe to their 53-man roster. ESPN’s Mike Reiss reported that it’s a three-year deal for Zappe that essentially restores his rookie contract. The Patriots waived Zappe as part of their initial roster cutdowns, before bringing him back on the practice squad.
New England also briefly had former Panthers quarterback Matt Corral on the main roster, but the team recently placed him on the exempt/left squad list. Corral remains on that list as of this writing on Wednesday morning. The Patriots also still have undrafted rookie Malik Cunningham, who played some quarterback in the preseason, on the practice squad.
