Patriots continue to add to secondary in free agency
The Patriots added to their 2022 free-agent class on Tuesday, agreeing to a deal with former Giants and Browns defensive back Jabrill Peppers. ESPN’s Adam Schefter and Mike Reiss first reported the signing.
Peppers, 26, is coming off a torn ACL suffered in Week 7 of the 2021 season. Schefter reported that he’s expected to be ready for the start of training camp.
The safety has played 61 career games with 59 starts between the Giants and Browns. Primarily a box safety, he’s posted 17-game averages of 92 total tackles, seven pass breakups, and six tackles for loss.
Peppers originally came into the NFL as a first-round pick to the Browns in 2017. The Patriots had no picks in the first two rounds that year. If Peppers can return close to the value that made him a high pick in the first place, he’d make for a strong addition to a Patriots defense in need of speed and athleticism.
