Patriots Free Agent Tracker, Day 5: The latest in 2022 NFL free agency
As we hit day five of 2022 NFL free agency, and the third day since the official start of the league year, the New England Patriots have been one of the league’s quieter teams on the open market.
Bill Belichick has made two free-agent additions from outside the organization, and both represent depth pieces: running back/returner Ty Montgomery signed with the Patriots on Thursday, while veteran cornerback Terrance Mitchell joined them on Wednesday. The majority of the Pats’ moves have focused on retaining veteran depth and leadership pieces for another 1-2 years. Those signings include Devin McCourty, James White, Matthew Slater, Brian Hoyer, and Nick Folk. They also tendered fourth-year restricted free agent wideout Jakobi Meyers for a one-year, $3.9 million deal.
The 2022 NFL free agency pool still features a number of players who could be difference-makers for their next teams. Linebackers Bobby Wagner and Melvin Ingram, wide receivers Julio Jones and JuJu Smith-Schuster, tackles Terron Armstead and La’El Collins, defensive ends Za’Darius Smith and Trey Flowers, defensive tackle Akiem Hicks, and safety Tyrann Mathieu are some of the top names to know entering Friday’s free-agent action.

Another star player is hitting the open market. The Eagles are releasing Fletcher Cox, according to
Fletcher Cox was released by the #Eagles with a post-June 1 designation, sources say. At 4p, $18 million would have become fully guaranteed. Cox is now a free agent but the team and his representatives continue to have discussions about a possible return.

Za’Darius Smith has become the latest free agent to change course after “agreeing” to a deal. According to

The Patriots are adding a pass-catching running back to their free-agent class. According to

He hasn’t approached his career-high 121 touches in 2016 since that season, and had only 31 total touches in 14 games with the Saints in 2021.
However, Montgomery also has experience as a kick returner. He has 57 career kick returns with an average of 22.4 yards per return. The Patriots will be his fifth team, after the Packers, Jets, Ravens, and Saints.
Montgomery could be the Patriots’ primary choice on kick returns and provide insurance for the recently re-signed James White. Bill Belichick certainly must love his versatility.
Cowboys release La’El Collins

The Dallas Cowboys could not find a trade partner for tackle La’El Collins, and will release him on Thursday, making him a free agent.
The Cowboys will release La'el Collins today, per source. Expected to be a post-June 1 cut, saves $10 million. No trade but Collins will have a good market once he's free to sign.

The Patriots aren’t done looking at cornerbacks after the signing of Terrance Mitchell. According to
